Welcome to 3rd Grade - LSS
In the words of Martin Luther King Jr. “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” This quote encompasses the goals that our grade three team aspires to achieve with our students. Several of the objectives we focus on in grade 3 are: developing initiative and independence, strengthening character, cultivating life-long readers, leaders and learners.
In addition to our four school-wide expectations (responsibility, respect, cooperation, safety) grade 3 also aims to instill in students independence, accountability and collaboration with peers. Among these expectations are: consistent homework completion, and daily at-home reading. Within the classroom we expect students to be self-motivated, engaged learners by participating in discussions and activities.
In grade three we use the Eureka Math, Common Core aligned math program which focuses on the following units: multiplication/division, measurement, fractions, geometry, data collection, and multiplication of area and perimeter. By the end of the year students are expected to master multiplication facts to 10.
Grade 3 provides a reader’s and writer’s workshop approach to our literacy instruction. Students become well versed in fiction, nonfiction, traditional literature, biography, mysteries, and poetry. They interact with text through small guided reading group work, partner discourse, cooperative book clubs and self-selected, independent “just right” reading leveled books.
We strive to equip students with the tools they need to empower themselves, transform the world around them and become effective citizens.
