Language Arts

Miss Kate Barber

Current Position: 7th grade Language Arts
Years Teaching: 10 years

Professional History:
Miss Barber began her career in education teaching 7th grade language arts at Ellington Middle School. After two years, she moved to the Vernon school district where she taught 8th grade language arts for five years. For the past three years, she has been a seventh grade language arts teacher.

Extracurricular Activities:
In her free time, Kate loves to read young adult literature, attend Zumba classes, and spend time with her two cats, Bella and Susie. 

Mrs. Kristina Dukette

Current Position: 7th grade Language Arts
Years Teaching: 8 years

B.S. in English from Eastern Connecticut State University

M.A. in Secondary Reading & Language Arts from the University of St. Joseph

 

Professional History:
Mrs. Dukette taught 7th & 8th grade English at Windham Middle School in Willimantic, CT for one year before moving on to VCMS. She taught 6th grade Language Arts for one year and has been teaching 7th grade Language Arts for the last few years.

Extracurricular Activities:
Mrs. Dukette is a TEAM mentor for new teachers in the district. She is also a co-chair of the VCMS Yearbook and participant in the annual talent show. Outside of school, Mrs. Dukette enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She likes to cook, read,  go to the beach, and throw frisbees for her crazy dog.

Mrs. Kathi Gudmundson

Current Position: 7th grade Language Arts    

Years Teaching: 6 years  

Degrees/Certifications: B.S. in Business Administration/Marketing from the University of Connecticut 1987

Post secondary English degree from Northwestern, and MCC 2006
State of Connecticut ARC graduate with distinction 2009

Professional History:
Mrs. Gudmundson began her career in Marketing and finance.  She worked for Meier Advertising as an advertising representative working with colleges on the East Coast designing and selling advertising to local business to help them fund their college brochures.  She then worked for a large wholesale nursery in Lebanon CT as the credit manager in charge of collections for a multi-million dollar company.  Additionally she worked with a designer from New York, collaborating to create their long standing logo, ""Step into a New American Garden.""  She then took time off to raise her children and to finish her English degree.

She began her teaching career in Windham with 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English.  She then had several long term substitute positions in Columbia and Andover both in 1st and 4th grade. She then moved on to Rockville High School where she taught 10th, 11th and 12th grade her first year and then 9th grade English for two more years.  She is now an 8th grade Language Arts teacher at Vernon Center Middle school.

Extracurricular Activities:   Mrs. Gudmundson is an avid gardener, is known in her hometown of Columbia as a "master gardener," and will often share her bounty with others who wish to start their own perennial gardens.  She can be found most days in summer in the garden with her trusty German Shepherd Samson at her side.  When not at the garden, she enjoys hiking, biking, reading and spending time at the beach with her husband and her two children, Rachel and James.                                                                               

Social Studies

Miss Jenna Angello

Current Position: 7th grade Social Studies
Years Teaching: 9 years

M.A. Secondary Education/Curriculum Development from Central Connecticut State Univsersity

 

Professional History:
Miss Angello has been teaching 8th grade U.S. History and will be transitioning to teaching 7th World Geography.

Extracurricular Activities:
Miss Angello has coached the VCMS girls softball team for 6 years and has just recently gone on her first Bermuda Workshop experience.  She hopes to add more social studies and history in the future of the workshop.

Mrs. Katherine Palmiter

Current Position: 7th grade Social Studies

Professional History:
Mrs. Palmiter began teaching 7th grade at East Windsor Middle School in 2005. In 2009 Mrs.Palmiter  joined the Vernon Center Middle School staff teaching 7th grade Social Studies.

Extracurricular Activities:
Mrs. Palmiter runs the Geography Bee every winter. She also enjoys being able to travel.

 

Mrs. Cynthia McManaman

Current Position: 6th grade Language Arts
Years Teaching: 8 years

B.A. Psychology from University of Colorado-Colorado Springs
Teacher Certification Program from University of Arizona
M.S. Middle Level Education from Walden University

Professional History:
Mrs. McManaman began her education career as a substitute teacher for the Department of Defense Dependent School system in England and Germany.  She completed her education and certification to become a social studies teacher while living in Arizona and Connecticut. She shifted her focus to being a full-time mom until 2002, when she served as the Education Coordinator and teacher-in-residence for the Tolland Historical Society.  Mrs. McManaman returned to substitute teaching for various towns in eastern Connecticut until beginning her position as a 7th grade social studies teacher at VCMS in 2008.

Extracurricular Activities:
Cyndee is the advisor for History Day.  Outside of school, she is an avid reader and loves to scuba dive and travel

Math

Ms Jamie Morello

Current Position: 7th grade Mathematics

Professional History:
Miss Morello began her career as a mathematics teacher, at Vernon Center Middle School, three years ago.

Extracurricular Activities:
Miss Morello works with Mrs. Dukette as a VCMS Yearbook Adviser.  In her free time she enjoys reading, going to the beach, and tending to her vegetable garden.

Ms Laurie Semprebon

Current Position: 7th grade Mathematics

Professional History:
Ms. Semprebon joined the United States Army after college to play in the bands. She worked as a secretary in a school before she earned her teaching certification and began teaching English and world history in Springfield, Massachusetts. The following year she was hired to teach English at Rockville High School and then moved to VCMS a year later.  She has been teaching English, computers, or math at VCMS since then.  She also taught adult GED (high school equivalency) in Rockville.

Extracurricular Activities:
Ms. Semprebon is from Colorado and has hiked thirteen "fourteeners", peaks above 14,000 feet.  She is a musician in her free time, playing in community concert bands and big bands. She plays clarinet, Eb clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor and baritone saxophones, and trombone. One of her favorite groups is Flamingo, an all-female big band in which she plays bari sax and clarinet.  She loves traveling with her family in their RV, hiking, and spending time with their three dogs, a Bichon-poodle, an Irish Wolfhound, and a Great Dane.

Mrs Melissa Bocek

Current Position: 6th grade Mathematics

Professional History:
Mrs. Bocek began her career in the banking industry.  She then transitioned into a legal secretary position at a law firm.  Next she decided to work for Hamilton Standard a division of UTC related to manufacturing aircraft products.  She started out as an executive secretary for the electronics department and soon was promoted to buyer, then senior buyer.  She was then asked to work for the IT department, as a specialist, to train people in various branches all over the world.  The satisfaction of educating others was intense and fulfilling, so she decided to pursue a teaching career.  Mrs. Bocek has worked at Vernon Center Middle School since 2007 with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students teaching mathematics, as a math interventionist and also as a classroom teacher.  She was named Teacher of the Year  2012 for Vernon Public Schools.

Extracurricular Activities:
Mrs. Bocek was the cheerleading coach at VCMS from 2007 through 2013 and also been involved with various after school activities throughout the years.  Mrs. Bocek has been involved in twirling baton since the age of 7 and has represented CT at national level competitions.  She has coached baton twirling, organized competitions for CT, and actively judges at events all over the country.  She is owner of Melissa's Majorettes since 1998 and has assisted her students in achieving titles for CT, MA, and the Northeast as well as various team events.  She also enjoys all outdoor activities including hiking, biking, gardening, tennis, and golfing, just to name a few.

Science

Mrs. Diane Rulli

Current Position: 7th grade Science
Years Teaching: 18 years

B.A.in  Biology,  Minor in Dance from Elmira College

M.S. Special Education from Central Connecticut State University

 

 

Professional History:
Ms. Rulli began her career as a preparatory technician in a cytology laboratory at New Britain General Hospital. Then worked as a claim representative for Allstate Insurance, while getting her teaching certification. She then began teaching High School Biology before transitioning to Middle School Science.

Extracurricular Activities: Ms. Rulli enjoys hiking, biking, gardening, and most of all, spending time with family.

Mrs. Danielle Pierce

Current Position: 7th grade Science
Years Teaching: 10 years

B.S. Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Connecticut

M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Saint Joseph

 

Professional History:
Mrs. Pierce began her teaching career at Vernon Center Middle school teaching 8th grade Physical science for three years.  Longing for warmer weather and sunnier sky's she moved to Hawaii and taught high school chemistry and Marine science for four years.  Tiring of beach life she came back to the wonderful state of Connecticut and back to VCMS.  She currently teaches 7th grade Life Science.

Extracurricular Activities:
Mrs. Pierce is kept busy by her precocious one year old daughter.  When she is not chasing her around she loves cooking, which is one of her favorite hobbies.  After mixing it up in the kitchen you can find Mrs. Pierce on a local golf course or tennis court.

Mrs. Sherree Wolfgang

M.A. Education from St. Joseph College

Professional History: Mrs. Wolfgang began her teaching career at VCMS in 2008. She taught 7th grade life science for 7 years before moving to the 8th grade. Before entering education, she worked a variety of jobs including preschool teacher, administrative assistant, hotel front desk, barista, and security officer for Mall of America and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Extracurricular Activities: Over the years, Mrs. Wolfgang has participated in many VCMS activities including PBS committee and governance council. She ran several extra curricular activities including SOAR Academy, science fair, Stock Market Game, and Pringles Challenge.


Outside of school, Mrs. Wolfgang enjoys adventures with her family, supporting her son in his new love of soccer, cooking, gardening and scrapbooking.

Mr. Ryan Kupferschmid

Professional History:
Mr. Kup began his career teaching 7th grade classes at VCMS.  He transitioned to 6th grade and 8th grade at various times in his career, but is back in the 7th grade, teaching a variety of classes.

Extracurricular Activities: Mr. Kup enjoys all forms of athletic activities, including basketball, boot camps, weightlifting, and chasing his 9-month-old daughter around.  He also enjoys playing guitar.

 

 

Reading Intervention

Ms Jessica Grady

Current Position: 7th/8th Grade Reading/LA
Years Teaching: 5 years

Professional History:
Ms. Grady began her teaching career at Rockville High School as a long-term substitute and tutor.  A year later, she was enjoying teaching middle school students at Vernon Center Middle School, where she has been teaching Language Arts and Reading Intervention for the past four years.  Additionally, Ms. Grady helps run The Newspaper Club.

Extracurricular Activities:
Ms. Grady enjoys leading a healthy lifestyle as a pescetarian and as an active person.  She spends a lot of time exploring the great outdoors or meeting a friend for a walk.  Ms. Grady loves to explore Connecticut and New England, try new foods, and flip salvaged furniture.

Mrs. Maria Goodman

Professional History:
Mrs. Goodman began her career in education at Vernon Center Middle School as the Math Title I teacher.  She was in that position for 3 years then moved on to teach 7th grade math, followed by 6th grade math. She has been a teacher at VCMS for 13 years.

Extracurricular Activities:
Mrs. Goodman enjoys reading and learning about the universe, and anything that has to do with the physical aspects of the universe, from black holes to the composition of atoms. She also likes to read novels, especially science fiction or Russian novels.   Mrs. Goodman also enjoys sewing, and together with Mrs. Mickewicz, runs the Sewing Club at VCMS.  Along with many other projects, she has made several quilts for her family.
