Vernon Center Middle School Homepage

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mr. Kent Batchelder.  He had recently been diagnosed with a serious illness and unfortunately lost his battle early Wednesday morning, June 11, 2014. Kent was a wonderful school counselor and person.  Since his arrival in Vernon in 2002, he had made an incredible contribution to the school and to the entire Vernon community.  He loved helping his students, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him and work with him were the better for it.

Our guidance department visited all classrooms and informed our students of this very sad news.  We have counselors available for any/all students who need help coping with this loss.  Please observe your child at home.  If you are concerned about any symptoms of grief that your child is exhibiting, please do not hesitate to contact our guidance department at 860-870-6072.

VCMS News & Coming Events:

ATTENTION:  Sports Team Try-outs will be the week of September 8.  Students must have medical forms ready to hand in on the day of tryouts.  The forms must be dated May 1, 2014 or later.   Please read the message below from our coaches: "This is an important message for any student who is planning on trying out for the soccer and cross-country teams at VCMS.  Tryouts for these sports will begin shortly after the school year begins.  In order to tryout, you MUST have a completed physical and sports' permission form.  Please make sure to take care of this well before the tryouts actually start.  The VCMS coaches cannot allow any student to participate in tryouts unless both of these forms are reviewed and completed." VCMS MISSION STATEMENT

The faculty, staff and administration of Vernon Center Middle School are devoted to helping every student achieve his/her maximum individual potential in a supportive environment. We recognize that this goal requires the collective best efforts of school personnel, the student, the parents/guardians and the community at large. Our staff and programs aid in the transition of students from middle school to high school. We offer programs and an environment that provides opportunities for students to participate in 21st century learning and for sound academic, social, artistic, physical, and emotional growth. We embrace the values of safety, organization, achievement, respect, and responsibility.

ABOUT VCMS

Mascot: Eagles; Motto: "Freedom With Responsibility"
School Colors: Blue and White

Our school was opened as a new building in 1966. We presently house grades 6, 7, and 8 with an enrollment of approximately 650 students. We have 86 certified staff members and 44 non-certified staff.

VCMS sees itself as an active part of many communities and we take our role in these communities very seriously. Each enriches the academic and social consciousness of our students and helps us develop the whole child.

POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT

Vernon Center Middle School is a Positive Behavioral Support school. PBS is designed to help school teams form behavioral and discipline systems that support student learning and social development. Nationally, PBS is currently practiced in over 8,000 schools. PBS is not an initiative, but a set of problem solving strategies and processes. Building upon existing strengths, school teams create well defined systems, use effective practices along with data centered evaluation methods to reshape their communities and help students achieve academic and social competence. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important part of a student’s educational experience. VCMS believes that teaching behavioral expectations through Core Values and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive and successful approach.

Vernon Public Schools Mission Statement

The Vernon Public Schools, in partnership with family and community, is committed to provide a quality education, with
high expectations, in a safe environment where all students become independent learners and productive contributors to society.
