VCMS MISSION STATEMENT
The faculty, staff and administration of Vernon Center Middle School are devoted to helping every student achieve his/her maximum individual potential in a supportive environment. We recognize that this goal requires the collective best efforts of school personnel, the student, the parents/guardians and the community at large. Our staff and programs aid in the transition of students from middle school to high school. We offer programs and an environment that provides opportunities for students to participate in 21st century learning and for sound academic, social, artistic, physical, and emotional growth. We embrace the values of safety, organization, achievement, respect, and responsibility.
POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL SUPPORT
Vernon Center Middle School is a Positive Behavioral Support school. PBS is designed to help school teams form behavioral and discipline systems that support student learning and social development. Nationally, PBS is currently practiced in over 8,000 schools. PBS is not an initiative, but a set of problem solving strategies and processes. Building upon existing strengths, school teams create well defined systems, use effective practices along with data centered evaluation methods to reshape their communities and help students achieve academic and social competence. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important part of a student’s educational experience. VCMS believes that teaching behavioral expectations through Core Values and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive and successful approach.
Our school was opened as a new building in 1966. We presently house grades 6, 7, and 8 with an enrollment of approximately 750 students. We have 86 certified staff members and 44 non-certified staff. We are located in Vernon Center, just a few minutes from Interstate 84. Visit the Town of Vernon website to find out more about our schools and government.
Mascot: Eagles Motto: "Freedom With Responsibility" School Colors: Blue and White
VCMS sees itself as an active part of many communities and we take our role in these communities very seriously. Each enriches the academic and social consciousness of our students and helps us develop the whole child.
VCMS has forged ties with its local community including the public library, police and fire departments, the parks and recreation department, and local hospitals. It also has links to civic organizations like Senior Citizens, local nursing homes, the Community Renewal Team, Catholic Charities, and the Tri-Town Pantry. Additionally, our school has many ties to the business community. Our affiliations at the state level include Girls Scouts of America, the YMCA, the Department of Children and Family Services, and even the Connecticut Children’s Hospital.
Vernon Public Schools Mission Statement
The Vernon Public Schools, in partnership with family and community, is committed to provide a quality education, with
high expectations, in a safe environment where all students become independent learners and productive contributors to society.
